The 200th Anniversary of the Great Antarctic Discovery by Russian Sailing Heroes

The honor of the discovery of Antarctica belongs to a Russian naval expedition led by Faddei Bellinghausen and Mikhail Lazarev. Their names have always entered the chronicle of mankind, as well as the feat of the Russian sailors going to the sloops «Vostok» and «Mirniy».

 

The expedition solemnly left Kronstadt on 15 July 1819 on sloops «Vostok» and «Mirniy», it lasted 751 days of them 100 days – in the ice. The ships have passed 49,860 miles.

In addition to the discovery of the «icy mainland», Russian sailors discovered 27 islands and a coral atoll.
